Berkeley, California
Jim and Laura Maser love the culture of Mexico, food and restaurants. In the early 90’s they began planning Picante, a 5,500 square foot casual dining restaurant authentic Mexican restaurant with handcrafted dishes composed of fresh local ingredients. Their operational competence was honed running Alice Water’s Café Fanny in Berkley, California.
JMA developed designs for a new 5,000 square foot restaurant in a warehouse district in Berkeley, California. The donut-plan is organized around a dining room with a high ceilings and tall glass doors opening onto a private courtyard reminiscent of restaurants the Masers and JMA visited in Oaxaca, Mexico. Peripheral dining terraces and step up from the central dining room creating a dining theater-in-the-round, day-lit by clerestory windows.
